Reboots and Riverdale

I’ve been gone for so long! I found a job on Craigslist and survived. I stood around a Walmart for about 39 hours for a marketing company. It was terrible.

Okay, I love reboots! If done correctly, (i.e. The Mummy and Spider-Man: Homecoming are incorrect), they are one of my favorite things ever.

Correctness is determined by several factors: demand and originality. For example, there was literally no demand for The Mummy reboot. Brendan Fraser is so good and the original has such a sense of adventure. No one asked for Tom Cruise’s action remake. Originality is also very important for a remake. No one wants to see the same movie with different actors (I’m talking about you, Spider-Man: Homecoming.) And I get it the whole one big Marvel universe thing, but it’s a bit much. (Also Tobey and Kristen will always be my Peter and Mary Jane.)

Onto to Riverdale!! This show is so interesting because it uses the idea and characters created by Archie Comics and gives it a Twin Peaks- esque style. Instead of being a wholesome 1950’s high school drama, Riverdale is a modern teen thriller.

Riverdale is a small town where usually nothing bad happens. Over the summer, one of the popular high school students drowns in the river. This rocks the Riverdale community to its core. Betty and Jughead are determined to figure out what happened. Archie is preoccupied with girls and the choice between sports and music (Troy Bolton anyone?) Veronica is worried about fitting in and her dad’s ponzi scheme. The story is not only dramatic, but honestly compelling and continually has me guessing what’s going to happen next.

The great thing about this show is the little things they do to pay homage to the original comic books. Style is one of the biggest things that references the original. Betty and Veronica are styled in the classic archetypes: good girl and bad girl respectively. Veronica’s darker hair and more revealing clothing is contrasted with Betty’s high pony and pastel sweaters.

My favorite part about the show so far is the dream like sequence that actually emulates the original Archie Comics. It’s so cool!!!

The second season is now filming and I’m so excited for it to come out next summer!
